The Birthday Party: Semi-Live Blog

The following takes place between the hours of midnight and midnight on Monday, September 15th: the day of Kate's 2?th birthday. 12.01am: Found me scrubbing the inside of my fan. It was disgustingly dirty with tons of fuzz on it and it was giving me an asthma attack everytime it was pointed in my face. This timing was brought about by a decision that I was going to wake up on my birthday to cleanliness and feel awesome after I discovered an honest to god slug on my toilet. After taking the slug outside, I scrubbed everything in the toilet and shower area, including the walls. This then lead me to my bedroom and I worked so hard at it I glanced up to notice that my birthday had already commenced and that 24 had found me in my pajamas, on the floor, furiously scrubbing away at a dismantled fan while listening to Al Green. Awesome. 1.17am: Conversation with mother, in which I hear salacious inner family gossiping and get to talk about the slug. 8am: On the dot, I am wished well by a rainstorm. I had entertained the notion of going outside on my birthday, but looks like it is a no. I have decided to make it a day of self-introspection with meditation and fasting instead to try to figure out what my priorities in life are. 8.01am: Fall back asleep. 9am: Chat with sister who reveals what my present is. 9.09am: Flip through endless episodes of 'Tru Calling' because I have an entirely misplaced crush on Zack Galifianakis. This man. 10.40am: Fall back asleep. This time to a West Wing episode--I never get tired of those. (Pun) 2.58pm: Awake and with one more episode of 'Tru Calling' I am on my way. It has been steadily and heavily raining all day making it look a lot like night time. Peruse facebook posts from some of the people in this timezone. Somewhere around this time I make Kateopoly money: 3-3.58pm: Tool around on guitar. Write new song, record it badly in garageband. 3.58pm-4.46pm: Clean kitchen. Windows may have never been cleaned by previous tenant. Hang laundry. Drink coffee. 4.50-5.37pm: Meditation. I feel awesome. My leg feels dead. 5.54-9.16pm: Kat is bored so we decide to go to an onsen. The onsens are closed because it is a national holiday (Respect for the Aged Day--I know, right?) and I want to get some things at Cosmos (it is a store sort of like Bartell's or Rite Aid and it is open 365 days a year. They are very proud of it.), but she turns a different way than I am expecting because she is going to a different Cosmos. On the way there, I see lights on in this place I go swimming but has an onsen on the first floor. It is indeed open and we bask naked in pools indoors and out while it rains around us. I even do a little naked dance in the rain. We also go to Cosmos. We narrowly avoid killing a frog outside my house. 9.21pm: I have some of a pepsi. 10.32pm: I change the lightbulb in the bathroom. Seemingly innocent, this small act makes me feel very grown up. I am a person Who Changes Her Own Lightbulbs. 11.03pm: Practicing guitar some more. It is kind of hard to take a photo of it, but my fingers look like I clawed my way out of a grave. It isn't a very good pic but you can at least see the outline of the peeling calluses: *Sidebar--my wastebasket, lemme show you it: 11.35pm: Talked to my mom again. We get cut off just as we are freaking out about the American economy and she is about to tell me some bad financial news. Fuuuck. However, not before she gives me baby pics of Krisandra--CUTE. Also, this pic with my suuuper young dad at the Seattle Center made me feel misty: 12.03am: Phew. It wasn't as bad as I thought. Now, I am going to break my fast. Addendum: Most pleased that this day, with no prior planning, was began and ended through the midnight hours with talking to my mom. Without whom, none of this would be possible.

Alas, a second frog was not so lucky as it was out in the middle of the goddamned road. Oh well, survival of the fittest and all that.
